Welcome to the website 'Friends of Swanage Bandstand'. We are a local Swanage group dedicated to saving the Swanage Bandstand and putting it back into use.
Swanage bandstand was manufactured by Walter Macfarlane & Co at the Saracen Foundry, Glasgow. It is made of cast iron and was installed in 1923. This incredibly important bandstand is one of the few remaining MacFarlane '224' bandstands left in the country (Leamington Spa, Sevenoaks and Uxbridge being the others).
The roof sustained storm damage and was removed by Swanage Council under health and safety grounds because asbestos was found. A restoration will put the bandstand back to its original condition and ensure its continued use for years to come as part of the local scene.
Pledges have already been received from a multitude of individuals and we are extremely grateful for their support. It is clear that the overwhelming opinion is that this is a piece of our history and culture that should not be lost.
The Friends of Swanage Bandstand have now successfully applied for and received charitable status. This means that your generous donations will be worth even more if you can complete our charity gift aid declaration form. Charitable registration will also enable us to access a wider range of funds and enable the taxable element of donations to be recovered.
